On this day in 1997, Dru Hill released ‘Never Make a Promise’.
It became the group’s second #1 single on the US R&B chart, following ‘In My Bed’. It spent four weeks at the top, and also peaked at #7 on the Hot 100.
‘Never Make a Promise’ was written and produced solely by Daryl Simmons, who also co-wrote and co-produced ‘In My Bed’. Some of Daryl’s other songwriting credits include ‘End of The Road’ by Boyz II Men, ‘Can We Talk’ by Tevin Campbell, and Whitney Houston’s ‘Queen Of The Night’.
Bruno Mars makes a reference to ‘Never Make a Promise’ in his #1 single, ‘That’s What I Like’, when he sings “I would never make a promise that I can’t keep”.
