On This Day: Boyz II Men’s ‘I’ll Make Love To You’ starts a 14-week run at #1

On this day in 1994, Boyz II Men started a 14 week run at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with the iconic Babyface-penned classic, ‘I’ll Make Love To You’.

The run ended when they knocked themselves from the top with ‘On Bended Knee’. At the time, they were the first act to replace themselves at #1 in 30 years, previously only achieved by The Beatles in 1964.

14 weeks was the record at the time for the most weeks at #1, tied with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’. Boyz II Men held the record prior to this with ‘End of The Road’ for 13 weeks, and then went on to break their own record with 16 weeks with ‘One Sweet Day’, their collaboration with Mariah Carey.

‘I’ll Make Love To You’ also reached #1 on numerous other Billboard charts, including the Adult Contemporary and R&B charts, and was a #1 hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Boyz II Men were awarded a Grammy for ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals’ for the song, and 2 American Music Awards for ‘Favourite Pop/Rock Single’ and ‘Favourite Soul/R&B Single’.

The Spanish version, ‘ Yo Te Voy A Amar ’ appeared on their 1995 album of the same name, and also the 1996 Japan compilation album ‘Extras’.

You can catch Boyz II Men at their Las Vegas residency at The Mirage between September and December this year.
