On this day in 1995, Mariah Carey released the classic hit ‘Fantasy’ as the lead single from her Diamond-certified ‘Daydream’ album.
The infectious song became the first by a female to ever debut at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and it stayed on top of the chart for eight consecutive weeks before being certified 3x Platinum. It was also a #1 hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and was a great success worldwide.
There were music videos produced for both the original track and the remix with O.D.B, and both were directed by Mariah, marking her directorial debut.
The remix featuring O.D.B, which was produced by Sean Combs, is often credited as being responsible for initiating the wave of R&B and Hip-Hop collaborations in mainstream pop culture.
The song was famously featured in the 1998 movie ‘Rush Hour’, and has also been included on a trailer for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds film ‘Free Guy’.
In late 2019, Mariah participated in the trending ‘#FantasyChallenge’ on TikTok whereby users on the platform uploaded videos of themselves doing a short dance to the ‘Fantasy’ remix.
In August 2020, the music videos were both remastered in HD, and an 11-track digital EP was released featuring the hip-hop and dance remixes, as well as Mariah’s live performance of the song at Madison Square Garden in 1995.
