On this day in 2002, Alanis Morissette released ‘Hands Clean’ as the lead single from the ‘Under Rug Swept’ album. It was written and produced solely by Alanis herself.

The song autobiographically speaks of a secret relationship between a 14-year old Alanis and a much older music executive mentor, with many of the lyrics sung from the man’s perspective.
It became her sixth #1 hit in Canada and her first #1 in New Zealand, and was a successful chart hit around the world.
