On this day in 2004, Kelly Clarkson released ‘Breakaway’ as a single from ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement Original Soundtrack’.

The song was co-written by Avril Lavigne for her own debut album, but when it didn’t make the cut, it was passed on to Kelly.

‘Breakaway’ spent 21 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, a record for the most weeks at #1 by a lead female artist, tied with Céline Dion and Adele.
It also won 2 Billboard Music Awards for ‘Hot Adult Contemporary Song’ and ‘Top Soundtrack Single’.

It wasn’t initially intended to be on Kelly’s second album, however due to the song’s established success, not only was it included, it became the title of the album.
Chart Positions:
- Australia: #10
- New Zealand: #12
- US: #6
