On this day in 1993, Toni Braxton released the iconic Babyface-penned single ‘Breathe Again’ from her debut album.
Toni has said that the song was originally intended for TLC, but when she heard the demo, she asked Babyface if she could sing it instead.
Although Toni’s previous single ‘Another Sad Love Song’ enjoyed moderate worldwide success, ‘Breathe Again’ became her breakout hit around the world.
The single peaked at #2 in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and #3 in the US.
‘Breathe Again’ earned Toni a Grammy Award for ‘Best Female R&B Vocal Performance’, and Soul Train Music Award for ‘Best R&B/Soul Single, Female’.
In addition to the well-known black and white music video, there was also a video made for the Spanish version of the song, and a colour version produced for the European market. The alternate videos aren’t currently available on Toni’s YouTube channel, but can be found on the 2001 DVD release ‘From Toni With Love: The Video Collection’.
In 2021, the Spanish version became available on online services for the first time to buy and stream as part of a re-issued digital edition of ‘The Essential: Toni Braxton’.
