26th Anniversary of Deborah Cox’s Self-Titled Debut Album

Today marks the 26th anniversary of Deborah Cox’s self-titled debut album.

The album included the singles ‘Sentimental’, ‘Who Do U Love’, ‘Where Do We Go From Here’, ‘The Sound Of My Tears’ and ‘Just Be Good To Me’.

‘Who Do U Love’ was the biggest worldwide hit from the album, peaking at #2 in New Zealand and going Platinum, and charting in the Top 20 in Australia, Canada and the US. It was also her first #1 hit on the US Dance Club Songs chart. Deborah has since collected thirteen #1 dance hits.

‘Where Do We Go From Here’ was the song which impressed executive Clive Davis, and led to Deborah signing with Arista Records. The song later became a Top 20 hit in New Zealand.

Writers on the album include Diane Warren, Babyface, Dallas Austin, Keith Crouch and Daryl Simmons. Deborah co-wrote three of the songs on the album, including the Top 5 R&B hit ‘Sentimental’.

The album has been certified Platinum in Canada and Gold in the US, and also earned Deborah a Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording.

In 2012, the album was remastered and re-released with a bonus 16-track remix disc. This edition is available to stream and purchase on digital music services as ‘Deborah Cox (Expanded)’.

Watch the music videos:

  1. I wanna know if Sentimental did go gold or not since it was #27 on the Hot 100 and #4 on Top R&B/ Hip Hop. I know that Who do you love did go gold. The album went platinum in Canada and the U.S. it is said to have only gone gold which I can’t believe,it’s supposed to be more.

    1. Sentimental isn’t on the RIAA website so I don’t think it was certified, unfortunately! The album was Gold but that was certified back in 1996. I think a lot of Deborah’s discography should be re-certified as it would be a lot higher now! 🙂
