On this day in 2004, Kelly Clarkson released ‘Breakaway’ as a single from ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement Original Soundtrack’.

The song was co-written by Avril Lavigne for her own debut album ‘Let Go’, but when it didn’t make the cut, it was passed on to Kelly. Avril has since released a new recording of the song as part of the 20th anniversary re-release of her debut album, and has also performed the song live on tour.

‘Breakaway’ spent 21 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, which held a record for the most weeks at #1 by a lead female artist, however this has since been surpassed by Adele’s ‘Easy On Me’ which spent 24 weeks on top.
The song also won 2 Billboard Music Awards for ‘Hot Adult Contemporary Song’ and ‘Top Soundtrack Single’.

‘Breakaway’ wasn’t initially intended to be on Kelly’s second album, however due to the song’s established success, not only was it included, it became the title of the album.
Notable Chart Positions:
