On this day in 1997, Dru Hill released ‘Never Make a Promise’ as the third single from their debut album.

It became the group’s second #1 single on the US R&B chart, following ‘In My Bed’. It spent four weeks on top, and also peaked at #7 on the Hot 100.

‘Never Make a Promise’ was written and produced solely by Daryl Simmons, who also co-wrote and co-produced ‘In My Bed’. Some of Daryl’s other songwriting credits include ‘End of The Road’ by Boyz II Men, ‘Can We Talk’ by Tevin Campbell, and Whitney Houston’s ‘Queen Of The Night’.
The theme of the music video is quite dark, depicting a story where Jazz’s pregnant girlfriend is being sexually assaulted by her father.
