On this day in 1997, Allure released their most successful hit, ‘All Cried Out’, featuring 112.
Allure were signed to Mariah Carey’s short-lived record label, ‘Crave Records’, and Mariah was directly involved in a lot of the group’s early work. It was reportedly her idea to cover ‘All Cried Out’, which was originally recorded by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam in 1985.
‘All Cried Out’ was produced by Mariah, along with Cory Rooney and Walter Afanasieff, and she also provided unmissable background vocals on the song.
The song’s music video, which featured a love story between Allure singer Alia and 112 singer Slim, was directed by Christopher Erskin, who is also responsible for the visuals of Boyz II Men’s ‘Doin’ Just Fine’, Brian McKnight’s ‘6, 8, 12’, and many more.
A number of dance remixes of ‘All Cried Out’ were produced by Hex Hector with new re-sung vocals by Allure, and without 112.
Internationally, the single peaked at #2 in New Zealand, #11 in Australia, and #12 in the UK.
In the US, the song peaked at #4, while also making an impact on a number of other Billboard charts including #3 on the Rhythmic Songs chart, #4 on Dance Singles Sales, #6 on Mainstream Top 40, #7 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales, and #9 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
These days Allure perform as a trio after one of their members left back in 2001.
