On this day in 1991, Mariah Carey released ‘Emotions’ as the lead single from the album of the same name.
The song famous for Mariah’s use of the whistle register, was written and produced by her and C+C Music Factory members Robert Clivillés and David Cole.

The upbeat track became Mariah’s fifth consecutive #1 single in the US, making her the only artist in history to have their first five singles top the chart. It also became her third #1 hit on the R&B chart, and her second #1 on the Dance Club Songs chart.
Internationally, it peaked at #1 in Canada, #3 in New Zealand and was a Top 20 hit in most major music markets.

The intro of the ‘12″ Club Mix’ which was produced by Robert Clivillés and David Cole, has become almost as well-known as the original song ever since Mariah performed it for her iconic MTV Unplugged show in 1992, and she continues to start ‘Emotions’ that way when she performs it live.

In July 2020, Mariah released a 5-track digital remix EP for ‘Emotions’ as part of commemorating her outstanding 30-year career. The music video was also remastered in HD for the first time.
