On this day in 2005, Kelly Clarkson released the worldwide hit, ‘Because of You’ from her ‘Breakaway’ album.

Kelly began writing this song at only 16 years old about her relationship with her father, and has said that the lyrics were written in just 25 minutes.
Kelly initially wanted the song to appear on her debut album, but her record label continuously rejected the song. After working with now ex-members of Evanescence, Ben Moody and David Hodges, to re-work the sound of the song, it was eventually accepted for Kelly’s second album, ‘Breakaway’.

The music video won an MTV Video Music Award, and a MuchMusic Video Award. The song has also been recognised with two ASCAP Country Music Awards.
Kelly later recorded the song as a duet with Reba McEntire for her duet album, ‘Reba: Duets’.

The song peaked at #4 in Australia and #7 in both the UK and the US, and was a Top 10 hit around the world.
