On this day in 1993, Xscape released their debut single, ‘Just Kickin’ It’. It was the first release by a group on the So So Def label owned by Jermaine Dupri, who marketed Xscape as a “hip-hop version of En Vogue”.

The single spent four weeks at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and also peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 behind Mariah Carey’s ‘Dreamlover’. It was certified Platinum in the US within a few months of release. Internationally, it was most successful in New Zealand, where it peaked at #22.

The ‘So So Def Remix’ also appeared as the final track on the group’s debut album, ‘Hummin’ Comin’ At ‘Cha’.
