On this day in 2009, Whitney Houston released ‘Million Dollar Bill’ from the ‘I Look To You’ album. It was her final single release before her passing in 2012.

The song was written and produced by Alicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beats, and samples Loleatta Holloway’s ‘We’re Getting Stronger (The Longer We Stay Together)’ from 1977. Whitney personally reached out to Alicia and asked to work together after being impressed by her performance at a Clive Davis party.

In the US, the single peaked at #1 on the Adult R&B Chart, as well as the Dance Club Songs chart. It peaked at #16 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, where it charted for thirty weeks. It also peaked at #5 in both the UK and Japan.

The music video was directed by Melina Matsoukas, who also directed the video for Whitney’s previous single ‘I Look To You’.
