On this day in 1994, Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey released their version of ‘Endless Love’, originally recorded by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

After Mariah discovered that Luther was recording an album of cover songs, it was her idea to include ‘Endless Love’ as a duet with her.

In New Zealand, the song spent five weeks at #1. In the US, the single peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, behind Boyz II Men’s ‘I’ll Make Love To You’, and also peaked at #2 in Australia, behind Kylie Minogue’s ‘Confide In Me’. It peaked within the Top 10 in numerous other countries.

‘Endless Love’ was Luther’s biggest commercial success of his career.

Mariah performed ‘Endless Love’ in 2019 for the first time since 1994, with Trey Lorenz, at Royal Albert Hall where she had famously performed it with Luther 25 years prior.
