On this day in 1995, Mariah Carey released the classic hit ‘Fantasy’ as the lead single from her Diamond-certified (11x Platinum) ‘Daydream’ album.

The infectious song became the first by a female to ever debut at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and it stayed on top of the chart for eight consecutive weeks. It has been certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA. It was also a #1 hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and was a great success worldwide.

There were music videos produced for both the original track and the remix with O.D.B, and both were directed by Mariah, marking her directorial debut.
The remix featuring O.D.B, which was produced by Sean Combs, is often credited as being responsible for initiating the wave of R&B and Hip-Hop collaborations in mainstream pop culture.

The song was famously featured in the 1998 movie ‘Rush Hour’, and more recently was featured in the 2021 motion picture ‘Free Guy’ starring Ryan Reynolds.

In late 2019, Mariah participated in the trending ‘#FantasyChallenge’ on TikTok whereby users on the platform uploaded videos of themselves doing a short dance to the ‘Fantasy’ remix.
In 2020, an 11-track digital EP was released featuring the ‘Fantasy’ hip-hop and dance remixes, as well as Mariah’s 1995 performance of the song at Madison Square Garden, and in 2021, the music videos were both upgraded to 4K.

In 2022, Mariah appeared on rapper Latto’s track ‘Big Energy (Remix)’, which interpolates ‘Fantasy’. The remix saw its biggest success in Australia, where it peaked at #6 with heavy radio airplay and has been certified Double Platinum. It was also a Top 20 hit in New Zealand and Ireland, and just missed the Top 20 in the UK where it peaked at #21. In the US, the remix peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart.

A new Funko Pop! Vinyl is now available paying tribute to Mariah’s iconic ‘Fantasy’ music video look. You can order it here.

‘Fantasy’ is also featured in Australian radio station 2Day FM’s most recent commercial. The ad is currently playing on television, in cinemas and across a range of social media platforms.
