On this day in 1999, Deborah Cox and R.L.’s duet ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ was released.

Written by Shep Crawford and Jimmy Russell, the song was included on Deborah’s second studio album ‘One Wish’ and was the first solo project for R.L. of R&B group Next.
The vocal arrangement was done by Montell Jordan, who also provided some of the background vocals.

The Gold-certified single topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in the US, and also peaked at #5 on Adult R&B Songs and #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The duo performed the hit together at the 1999 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
