Today marks the 24th anniversary of Deborah Cox’s mega hit, ‘Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here’, which was the lead single from her second studio album, ‘One Wish’.
Interestingly, the song written by Montell Jordan and Shep Crawford, was originally offered to Patti LaBelle, who turned it down. Patti has however performed the song live since. Before making its way to Deborah, it was also being looked at by label heads for potentially Faith Evans or Kelly Price, but luckily Deborah fought for it and won.
‘Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here’ dominated numerous Billboard charts and remains Deborah’s most commercially successful single release of her career, and has become her signature song.
- It spent fourteen weeks at #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which at the time was the record for the most weeks on top of that chart.
- It spent thirteen consecutive weeks at #1 on the Adult R&B Songs chart.
- It spent one week at #1 on the Dance Club Songs Chart with a Hex Hector remix.
- It peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for eight weeks.
- It has reportedly sold over 1.9 million copies in the US alone, and has been certified Platinum.
- The single also won a Soul Train Award, and Soul Train Lady of Soul Award.
