On this day in 1992, En Vogue released the anti-prejudice anthem ‘Free Your Mind’ from their multi-Platinum album ‘Funky Divas’. The song was reportedly written in response to the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

It peaked at #8 in the US, and was a Top 20 hit in Canada, New Zealand, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK.
The music video won three MTV Video Music Awards in 1993 for ‘Best R&B Video’, ‘Best Dance Video’ and ‘Best Choreography’.

Two alternate versions of the song have been recorded by the group; in 1992 for the ‘Barcelona Gold’ Olympics soundtrack, and in 2017 for Netflix shows ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and ‘GLOW’.
