Today marks the 25th anniversary of Brandy and Monica’s timeless classic ‘The Boy Is Mine’.

The duet, which was co-written and co-produced by Brandy, spent 13 weeks at #1 and became the best-selling song of 1998 in the US. It was the first #1 for both artists, and was the first collaboration between two female solo artists to top the chart since Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer in 1979.

Internationally, the song was a #1 hit in New Zealand, the Netherlands and Canada, and overall became a Top 5 hit in over 15 countries.

The song earned both singers their first Grammy Award for ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group’, as well as a BMI Pop Award and three Billboard Music Awards.
The only televised live performance of the song as a duet was at MTV’s 1998 Video Music Awards, where ‘The Boy Is Mine’ was nominated for two awards.

The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn, and featured Mekhi Pheifer as the love interest. Later that year, Mekhi also played Brandy’s boyfriend in ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’.

Did you know the relevance of Brandy watching The Jerry Springer Show in the video is that an episode of that show is what inspired the concept of the song?
